Introduction

The Serrat de Montsoriu vineyards and winery are at the Can Serrat estate, located at the foot of the hill holding the Montsoriu Castle. They are part of the 30,000 hectares (74,000 acres) of forest, meadows pastures, farmhouses, towns and farmland that make up the Montseny Natural Park, one of UNESCO’s Biosphere Reserves. The peculiar geophysical characteristics of the Montseny Massif – with lands ranging from 150 metres (500 feet) up to 1,700 metres (5,000 feet) above sea level in a relatively small area – make it a wonderful space that hosts a wide diversity of flora and fauna.

In this exceptional environment, we cultivate the 2 hectares (5 acres) of the estate, as well as a further 4 hectares (10 acres) nearby. The clay and sandstone soils, the sauló (a sandy granite soil), and the decisive influence of the climate of the massif create a microclimate that brings new nuances to well-known varieties such as Alvarinho, Pinot Noir, Mencía, Merlot, Chardonnay and Syraz. We also have small quantities of Loureiro, Treixadura, Cainho Blanco and Riesling, and three types of Muscat.
